Conscious Sedation or Sleep Dentistry
We’re well aware of the fact that, for some individuals, going to the dentist can cause mild to severe anxiety. This fear of the dentist is more common in older people who have long associated a dental visit with pain, which is unfortunate because, at Dossett Dental, the very latest techniques and highly advanced uses of anesthesia have led us to the practice of virtually pain-free dentistry. Not just an advertising slogan or false promise, pain-free dentistry is a reality that has been greatly aided by what is known as conscious sedation or sleep dentistry.
Typically used for invasive procedures such as dental implant therapy, bridge work, certain types of gum tissue therapies, difficult tooth extractions, etc., conscious sedation is exactly as the term implies. A patient is awake during the dental procedure, but in a sedated, fully relaxed state aided by local anesthetics that eliminate any pain caused by whatever therapy is being applied.
Conscious Sedation and Temporary Amnesia
Sleep dentistry sedatives can be administered orally or intravenously, and are oftentimes used in conjunction with other pharmaceutical agents that serve to erase the entire dental event from the patient’s memory. Many individuals report having no recollection whatsoever of anything that happened while they were awake in the dentist’s chair. Used often at Dossett Dental, we want you to know that conscious sedation is widely recognized to be:
- Safe form of sedation – The overall health of a patient is carefully reviewed before he or she is selected as a candidate for conscious sedation. During the procedure, the patient is monitored continuously by an anesthesiologist or a specially certified nurse anesthesiologist. After an hour or two in the recovery room, the still groggy patient can be driven home.
- Effective sedation procedure – Regardless of the procedure performed, the patient’s complete comfort is maintained at all times.
